Gunnar Comes Home! (Excerpt)

Quadrant: Pacific Time.
Sector: 45.
Corporate Zone: SE-45.
1223 hours.

“Captain Rourke,” the Asset Protection Pilot called over his shoulder, “we have visual contact. ETA, approximately two minutes.”

Eyes closed, reclining in his ErgoNaut seat, Gunnar nodded. “Very good, Corporal. Thank you.”

“Hope you enjoyed the ride, sir.”

Sighing, Gunnar allowed Eos to finish Yeats’ “Second Coming,” visualizing himself as a rough beast, slouching—not towards Bethlehem, but towards Asset Protection Base CA-2.

His home away from home.

“That was beautiful, Eos. Thank you.”

“My pleasure, Captain Rourke. And thank you for the compliment.”

Smiling, Gunnar opened his eyes, turned to the shaded viewing pane beside him. The PRO-CopTer in which he sat began to dip, wobbling as it hit a crosscurrent, then righted under the pilot’s firm hand. Gunnar didn’t mind the CopTer, but he much preferred a RaptR Jet for transport. Faster, less noise, and far more comfortable. Of course, for overall style, nothing beat The Raven.

Ah, the other love of my life…

Thus far, it had been a pleasant day. Gunnar had slept in until 0700 hours, then rose and completed his regulation workout. After showering and gathering his equipment, he’d enjoyed a pleasant breakfast with Daphne. She’d teased him about falling in love with LV-RA and he’d tickled her as punishment. He hated to leave, but duty called and his Transport Team arrived right on time. From there, a short drive to the airfield on the outskirts of Civilian Center 455. Then he’d changed into his PRO-T-EN Corps gear and boarded the PRO-CopTer. The flight had been smooth, and he looked forward to meeting his new Savant Team.

“One minute to arrival, Captain.”

“Copy that, Corporal.”

Smiling, Gunnar fastened his seatbelt and placed his hands on the armrests. The peculiar sensation of the CopTer dipping low always made him uneasy.

And this is why I joined Asset Protection, Land Division—not Air Division…
